NH FARM TO RESTAURANT LAUNCHES VOLUNTARY CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

By Helen Brody (July 22, 2011)

TNew Hampshire Farm to Restauranthe New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant Connection (NHFRC) has developed a new “Certified Local” program to highlight New Hampshire restaurants that are committed to supporting local agriculture. The “Certified Local” designation indicates that restaurants meet selected criteria to demonstrate the purchase and incorporation of New Hampshire farm and food products.

The New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant Connection began in 2004 and is a collaboration of organizations and individuals whose goal is to link New Hampshire producers of food and farm products with New Hampshire restaurateurs and chefs. NHFRC has also been working to strengthen and improve the distribution system that directly connects the farms to the restaurants and other retailers.  Growers’ Dinner events, which feature all New Hampshire menus, and are held at restaurants and farms around the state each summer and fall, are coordinated by NHFRC.

The new “Certified Local” program from NHFRC recognizes a restaurant’s commitment to local food culture.  This is a voluntary program intended to benefit farms, restaurants and consumers.  To participate, restaurants complete and submit an application found on the NHFRC website and schedule an evaluation by NHFRC staff. The organization plans a directory of certified restaurants to be available before the end of the year.

Supporting local agriculture results in economic, environmental and quality of life benefits. Supporting local farms helps preserve the heritage, rural character and economy of New Hampshire, while enabling families eat fresh, healthy food, grown close to home.
