Apple Hill Farm, Concord, NH

By Helen Brody (January 13, 2009)

applehilblOver 20 years ago Diane and Chuck Souther  started Apple Hill Farm from unproductive open space within sight of the state capitol in Concord. Today they have a substantial planting of 45 different varieties of apples planted on the hillside overlooking their farmstand and berry patch. Twenty different flavors of peaches and a small number of plum trees fill out their orchards. They work closely with University of New Hampshire to grow their fruits as pesticide free as possible – a difficult task as, unlike vegetable crops, disease and insects are hard to control fruit trees.

Pick your own strawberries are their first summer berry crop, followed by blueberries, raspberries, and black black currants. Vegetables grown on the farm complement their berries at farmers markets (see listing below).

applehilldisplayblApple Hill’s farmstand which opens for the apple season (check website below) has a complete kitchen to make slow simmered jams and jellies with their own fruit fresh off the bushes. With fruits so fresh Diane does not need pectin in her preserves – just fruit and sugar. Baked goods, many chosen by her husband as his favorites, and dried coffee cake and pancake mixes complete the kitchen items.
