Helen Brody
Helen Brody is the driving force behind the New Hampshire Farms web site.
Helen serves on the advisory board of the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets & Food, is a director of the New Hampshire Farm to Restaurant Connection, and is on the steering committee for Valley, Food, and Farm, an organization representing farms and farmers in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont. She is also a member of the New Hampshire Farm Bureau and the Upper Valley Slow Food Convivium. In addition, Helen writes a bi-monthly column for the Hanover and Lebanon Co-Ops, and is editor of the Culinary Historians of New York’s newsletter. As a features writer, Helen specializes in New England regional and generational foods, particularly as related to New Hampshire.
Helen Brody started life on a small farm in Maryland complete with chickens, an apple orchard and a large vegetable garden. The versatility and efficiency of the farms in her adopted state spawned her book New Hampshire: From Farm to Kitchen.
While researching the book, Helen found it difficult to locate one source that adequately conveyed the unique history of each farm and the personalities of those who owned them. Her hope is this new website, designed to showcase New Hampshire farms with a spotlight on the roles women play to make them successful, fills that void by eliciting an appreciation of the small farm and the land it preserves. Recipes on the site reflect the diversity of products grown for consumption, and farms that welcome visitors, whether at farm stands, at the farm door, at markets, or for overnight stays, are noted in each profile.
Helen welcomes feedback on the web site as well as writing, research, and public presentation projects. She can be reached by phone at (603) 727-9251 or by email through the Contact Us page.
